What Are Adaptogens?
Adaptogens are all the rage these days - they’ve become the ingredient du jour for fitness fanatics, beauty bloggers, and countless others who are looking for a bit more balance in their life. But what are adaptogens, and what are the benefits to these mysterious herbs?
Benefits of Adaptogens
In short, adaptogens are plants that, when consumed, help the body counteract stressors and recenter. They help mitigate mental and physical stresses. In short, they help the body help itself. And, despite the current frenzy surrounding these powerful plants, they have actually been in use for a long time.
Adaptogens have been observed to:
Boost attention, brain function, and mental performance in individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome
Increase endurance in individuals with mild fatigue and weakness
Exhibit anti-depressive capabilities
Exactly how adaptogens work is still unknown, but recent studies have started to point the way, at least in broad strokes. Adaptogens appear to operate within the endocrine system and influence the levels of cortisol (the “stress hormone”) circulating within the body. Studies are currently being conducted to better understand how they can be used to treat chronic illnesses or even possibly increase longevity.
Examples of Adaptogens
Much of today’s adaptogen spotlight is occupied by mushrooms and fungi such as cordyceps, reishi, lion’s mane, and others. Other popular adaptogens include ginseng, maca, moringa, and ashwaganda.
At Hawaiian Ola, we’ve harnessed a few adaptogens in our own products.
Our Kona Teas feature holy basil (also known as tulsi), which is particularly helpful in combating long term stress, both physical and emotional.
Noni, Hawai`i’s own superfood, is an adaptogen that supports the adrenals. It’s also said to boost one’s energy and mood - something that our happy fans can attest to! We use it in our sparkling noni drinks as well as in our noni juice shots.
